Hopewell Chin’ono Events Timeline

On this day in 1971, Zimbabwean award winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono was born in Harare. In 1993, he left Zimbabwabwe going to advance in his studies in United State of America. Chin’ono later worked for broadcasters such as BBC and ITV. In 2007, he came back to settle in Zimbabwe were he continued advocating for fratenity, equality and liberty in his country.

On this day in 2020, award winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono was arrested for exposing the Government for Covid-19 procurement fraud within the health ministry.

On this day in 2020, Award winning Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono was granted bail by the Harare High Court. Chin’ono was released from Chikurubi prison, where he had been detained since 7 August 2020. The reason for his arrest was for ‘incitinging in engaging to public violence’.

On this day, in 2020, in Harare, detained journalist Hopewell Chin’ono had initially been charged with contravening Section 184 (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform). The Act which deals with defeating or obstructing the course of justice when he appeared in court.

On this day in 2020, Harare High Court judge overturned the decision of Magistrate Ngoni Nduna who had disqualified human rights lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa from representing human rights defender and Award winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono. Therefore, Nduna was suspended from participating in the trial of Hopewell Chin’ono.

On this day in 2011, award winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono was granted bail after weeks in prison. He was arrested for communicating falsehood about the police officer arguing that the police officer had killed an infant whilst enforcing lockdown rules.

On this day in 2021, Zimbabwe global journalism seminar was held. The main ideas which were discussed were on how journalism has suffered in Zimbabwe, cyber security laws and how to deal with online trolls. Subsequently, Award winning journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono addressed how he was mistreated on occassions he was held in custody and in all his arrests for organising protests.

On this day in 2021, award winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono was awarded the Greenfield people journalist of the year 2020. He was awarded for giving an investigating reporting on the COVID-19 procurement corruption which was done by high profile public officials including the Health Minister in Zimbabwe.

On this day in 2021, the Zimbabwe Anti Corruption Commissioner (ZACC) Jessie Fungayi Majome filed a lawsuit against award winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono taxing $US 350 000 for character assassination.
