On this day in 1949, former Zimbabwean War Veterans leader the late Dr Chenjerai Hunzvi was born. Dr Hunzvi came to prominence when he was arrested at the age of 16 for supporting the national struggle. He was later sent to study in Romania after it was judged that he was a bright student. He later on moved to Poland where he studied medicine and qualified to become a medical doctor. In 1979 he was part of the Lancaster House talks in London. In 1990 he moved back to Zimbabwe and open a medical practise in Harare. Dr Hunzvi later on became chairperson of the Zimbabwe Liberation War Veterans Association. Dr Hunzi died at the age of 51 in 2001.
