On this day in 1977, Zimbabwean activist and religious leader Evan Mawarire was born. Mawarire obtained his education in Zimbabwe. He was a pastor at Celebration Church before establishing his own church, His Generation Church. He rose to prominence in politics when he organized protests (#ThisFlag) in the country that opposed Mugabe’s reign.
On this day in 2017, Zimbabwean Pastor and democratic activist Evan Mawarire was arrested. He was charged for insulting the national flag of Zimbabwe and undermining the power of the late former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Gabriel Mugabe together with his Government.
Pastor Evan Mawarire, was on this day released on bail on a condition that the state kept his passport. Evan Mawarire is a human rights defender who was very active between 2016 and 2017 working on exposing corrupt practices within the government of Zimbabwe. He had been arrested on 1 February upon arrival in Zimbabwe.
On this day in 2017, in Harare, pastor Evan Mawarire was freed after being arrested for subversion. He had been detained for protesting against how Mugabe handled the economic state of Zimbabwe. He get another trial for protesting university student in June that same year.
