On this day in 1944, prominent Rhodesian (now Zimbabwe) wicketkeeper and batsman Howard Bruce Gardiner (late) was born in Bulawayo. In a match for a Matabeleland Invitation XI in Bulawayo he scored 86 in 58 minutes which included five sixes and ten fours which made him a famous player. In June 2018, he died in South Africa after a long suffering with cancer for 18 years.
