Zimbabwean novelist, poet and playwright Chenjerai Hove died aged 59 in Norway

On this day in 2015, Zimbabwean novelist, poet and playwright Chenjerai Hove died aged 59 in Norway. In 2001, he went exile to the West. Hove was a freedom fighter and for this reason he advocated for human rights in his native country. In 1988, he published a novel, “Bones” and the main thematic concerns were directed to separation. In 1987, he was awarded as one of the best Zimbabwean writers.

Jacob Chengedzeni Satiya Ngarivhume, the leader of Transform Zimbabwe (TZ) together with his supporters were arrested and detained for holding a political meeting without police clearance

On this day in 2014, the leader of a newly formed political party, Transform Zimbabwe (TZ) Jacob Chengedzeni Satiya Ngarivhume and 13 party supporters were arrested and placed in custody at the Gweru Central Police Station. There were charged for violating Section 37(1) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act for holding a political meeting at Vashandiri Centre in Mkoba Gweru. The 13 members were however declared innocent on 17 September.

The late former Rhodesian Prime Minister Garfield Todd was born

The late former Rhodesian Prime Minister Garfield Todd was born in Invercargill, New Zealand. Todd emigrated to Southern Rhodesia from New Zealand in 1934 as a Protestant missionary and ran the Dadaya New Zealand Churches of Christ Mission school. In 1948 Todd won election to parliament. He succeeded Sir Godfrey Martin Huggins as leader of the United Rhodesia Party and Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia in 1953 when Huggins became the inaugural Prime Minister of the newly established Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1953.

The late Zimbabwean first trained black physician and medical doctor Tichafa Samuel Parirenyatwa was born on this day in 1927. Parirenyatwa was born in Rusape. He later died in 1962 after a train wreck near Bulawayo.

The Zimbabwe constituton draft was completed

The first draft of the Zimbabwe constitution was released on this day, but it was highly contested. The rejected provisions covered devolution, presidential running mates, the constitutional court, a prosecuting authority, a clause on land commission, same-sex marriage and foreign funding of political parties.

Zimbabwean Politician Simbarashe Mumbengegwi was born on this day in Chivi district of Zimbabwe. He attained his primary and secondary education in Zimbabwe and later on moved to Australia where he pursued his tertiary studies at Monash University. At Monash University he was the popular and affable President of the African Students Association. He was a political exile and after independence he came back to Zimbabwe and held several government and minesterial posts. Currently, he serves as the Minister of Macro-Economic Planning and Investment Promotion.

Former first African women to serve as President of the Senate of Zimbabwe Edna Madzongwe was born

On this day in 1943, Former first African women to serve as President of the Senate of Zimbabwe Edna Madzongwe was born. Madzongwe holds a BA degree and her area of specialisation is English. In 1990, she was elected as a member of Parliament and in 1994 she served as the Deputy Minister of Education and Culture.

MDC party official Gift Mutsvungunu was found dead in Kuwadzana 3 in Harare

On this day in 2008, Gift Mutsvungunu MDC party polling agent was found dead in Kuwadzana 3 in Harare. It was discovered that his body had suffered from serious torture, burns and his eyes were gouged out. His death brought the death toll of MDC activists to 113 since 29 March 2008.

Zimbabwe’s second post-independence Finance Minister Benard Thomas Gibson Chidzero (late) was born in Salisbury (now Harare)

On this day in 1927, Zimbabwe’s second post-independence Finance Minister Benard Thomas Gibson Chidzero (late) was born in Salisbury (now Harare). Chidzero was born to a Malawian father and Shona mother. He grew up in Chitungwiza and was schooled at Kutama College, St. Francis College in Southe Africa. He later attended Pius XII Catholic University College in Lesotho where he obtained a Degree in Psychology. He later obtained an MA in political science from the University of Ottawa, and in 1958 a PhD in political science from McGill University in Montreal. He was interested in African politics and as a Pan Africanist he became friends, in the London African circuit, with giants like Jomo Kenyatta, Kwame Nkrumah, Hastings Kamuzu Banda and Seretse Khama.

On this day in 1899, The late Rhodesian (now Zimbabwe) barrister, politician and judge Robert Clarkson Tredgold was born in Bulawayo. Clarkson attended first Prince Edward School and then Rondebosch Boys’ School in Cape Town, South Africa. He was a Rhodes Scholar and read law at Hertford College. In 1968, he published a book titled, ‘The Rhodesia that was my life’. Clarkson died on 08 April 1977.

Former rugby union professional player Robert Brian Skinstad was born in Bulawayo, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe)

On this day in 1976, former rugby union professional player Robert Brian Skinstad was born in Bulawayo, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He rose in prominent in 1997 when he made his debut against England. In 2004, he retired in South Africa and signed with Newport Gwent Dragons in Wales.
