Zimbabwe’s second post-independence Finance Minister Benard Thomas Gibson Chidzero (late) was born in Salisbury (now Harare)

On this day in 1927, Zimbabwe’s second post-independence Finance Minister Benard Thomas Gibson Chidzero (late) was born in Salisbury (now Harare). Chidzero was born to a Malawian father and Shona mother. He grew up in Chitungwiza and was schooled at Kutama College, St. Francis College in Southe Africa. He later attended Pius XII Catholic University College in Lesotho where he obtained a Degree in Psychology. He later obtained an MA in political science from the University of Ottawa, and in 1958 a PhD in political science from McGill University in Montreal. He was interested in African politics and as a Pan Africanist he became friends, in the London African circuit, with giants like Jomo Kenyatta, Kwame Nkrumah, Hastings Kamuzu Banda and Seretse Khama.
