On this day in 2006, the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions leadership was assaulted by the police while in police custody. These included the President Lovemore Matombo, Secretary General Wellington Chibebe, 1st Vice President Lucia Matibenga and 2nd Vice President George Nkiwane.
On this day in 2008, President of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) Lovemore Matombo and his secretary were arrested for giving speeches patterning political malaise in the country. For this reason, there were held in custody for 11 days.
In an attempt to stop a planned march/ demonstration against the newly introduced monetary and fiscal policies termed austerity measures by Prof Mthuli Ncube, the ZRP raided the ZCTU offices and arrested the leaders of the union. Several other union workers were arrested on the day in different cities.
On this day in 2019, the police arrested Japhet Moyo, Secretary General of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU). He was facing charges of inciting public violence and subversion of the constitutional government in connection with the 2019 January protests.
