On this day in 1924, the late Zimbabwean politician, Maurice Nyagumbo was born in Rusape. Nyagumbo befriended William Mashaba who introduced him to the Rhodesia Communist Party. After the Communist Party party was banned in 1948, Nyagumbo by chance met James Chikerema, who helped him to form Central African Social Club (CASC) for the purpose of involving Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in Political activities. In March 1980 Nyagumbo was appointed as the Minister of Mines in the first independent Government of Zimbabwe.
