On this day in 1961, the late artist Paul Mataire was born in Zimbabwe. He lost his eyesight to glaucoma at a young age. Matavire began his music career in the 1980s when he joined the Jiros Jiri Band at the Jairos Jiri Rehabilitation Center in Bulawayo, he then led the group. His music gained popularity due to his humor, use of deep shona words and his willingness to tread on what many artists regarded as sensitive societal issues. He died in 2005 at the age of 44.
